Early Childhood Hub – Guide to sending your own submissions

Early Childhood Hub Submissions – FAQs for Montessori Global Education Network members

The Early Childhood Hub (ECH)  is packed with content both for and by Early Years educators. The ECH launched in 2022, as a joint offer from Montessori Global Education and Chartered College of Teaching (CCT). Our organisations are now inviting Montessori Global Education Network members to submit their own work for publication on the Hub.

The Hub’s Publishing Manager, Phoebe Dry, has prepared the following Q&A specifically for Network members. If after reading the Q&A, you’re interested in submitting and want to explore your idea with colleagues at CCT, just email the Early Childhood Hub team at journal@chartered.college for a personal response.

What kind of submissions is ECH looking for, and what should they contain?

ECH welcomes two types of articles: case studies and perspectives.

Case studies offer studies of settings or occurrences – such as a pedagogical interventions, observations, teaching initiatives or approaches to professional learning. Case studies highlight practical applications, and a bulleted list of ‘key takeaways’ is particularly useful. Those takeaways should be transferable and applicable to Early Years educators at all career stages – a variety of specialisms and settings are considered. Case studies can be submitted in a range of formats, including:

      • writing (1000 – 1,500 words)
      • audio file (approx. 5-6 minutes)
      • video (approx 5-6 minutes)

Perspectives are useful, interesting and balanced perspectives on a specific topic. They demonstrate thorough knowledge and understanding of the research, supported by relevant, recent references (eg blogs, articles, webpages, interviews, journals and books). Perspectives are:

      • around 1,000-2,000 words (including references)
      • research-informed, with practical applications offered where possible
      • written for a practitioner readership.

Language should be accessible and formal but not overly formal. First -person pronouns can be used to create a tone of peer-to-peer support and a sense of community.

Can I choose the topic?

Within reason! ECH is looking to publish case studies and perspective articles relating to the broad themes of pedagogy, professional development, child development and the impact of early childhood education. They are also interested in certain aspects of pedagogy and practice, such as play, language development and early literacy, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, understanding the world, expressive arts and design, mathematics and numeracy, wellbeing (child and practitioner), supporting young children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and parental and family engagement.

I’m interested! What should I do next?

First, you’ll submit an outline proposal. This should comprise your article title, article type, a 200-word summary including the theme/s you wish to cover, plus short list of references to journal@chartered.college. ECH will your submission to check it meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guide (see below), and they may ask for some revisions. Articles may be edited by their publishing team for length and clarity, but the final version will always be sent to you for approval.

Will I receive further guidance?

If your proposal is accepted, you’ll be sent a copy of the Early Childhood Hub Author Guide when ECH invites to submit a full article. You’ll also have access to one-to-one editorial support upon request – the ECH team is there to help!

How long should it take?

ECH operates quick turnaround times and tight publishing schedules. The submission to publication timeline is typically around 3 months, depending on other publishing commitments. ECH accepts submissions year-round and communicates specific deadlines following submission.
