In English:
For those of us who directly or indirectly engage with children, following the philosophy and pedagogy left to us by Maria Montessori, we recognise that along with the child (whom it is our primary task as adults to follow), there are two very important components that influence children’s development: the environment and the guide/educator.
Each component of this triad has a key role in children’s development; each one plays an important leadership role in a child’s life.
With a focus on this aspect, the panelists of the Perceptions of Leadership Through a Montessori Lens panel event in Spanish, were invited to share their perspectives with us.
On July 9, our panel convened to discuss their views on leadership. The panel considered the following amongst other considerations:
- How the environment influences this idea of leadership,
- how not only the child but also the adult is a leader in a Montessori environment
They also considered other very relevant points related to their vision of a leader and what impacts their integral development.
These were some of the valuable reflections the panelists shared on the topic:

In English:
These reflections invited the attendees to share their own individual thoughts about leadership.
At the beginning and end of the conversation, we asked the same question: If I asked you to think of a leader, who would come to your mind?
In English:
The panel discussion highlighted that the concept of leadership not just applicable to individuals with a “title” or a specific role but rather it also applies to everyone, child or adult, to positively influence their environment.
At the conclusion of the panel discussion we asked our attendees to share their main takeaways; their responses included the following: we all can be leaders, I am a leader, I need to create more leaders, support children.
In English:
One key aspect was highlighted throughout the discussion:
- Both the carefully prepared environment and the attentive and respectful guide or adult are fundamental to cultivating the innate leadership potential in each child or individual.
We hope that this deeper understanding of the term leadership will encourage us all to continue to reflect and consider how we could continue to create and promote spaces that foster independence, responsibility, and mutual respect, as these are the three essential elements for the integral development of future leaders and all individuals in general.
