There is a great sense of community within the Montessori classroom, where children of differing ages work together in an atmosphere of cooperation rather than competitiveness. There is respect for the environment and for the individuals within it, which comes through experience of freedom within the community.

Maria Montessori

Dr Maria Montessori was not only an educator and scientist but also a champion of humanitarian causes.  We honour her work and legacy by having a range of social impact programmes that are allied and use Montessorian values to create social impact.

Collaboration is an important tenet of Montessori and we put collaborative relationships at the heart of all we do.

Our Projects

Our five-year strategy is designed to support the needs and priorities of children, families and their educators, especially in disadvantaged communities across the globe. Along the way, we will transform our Montessori organisation into an even better agent of change within the education sector by aligning all parts of our operations to achieve our mission.

While our goals are ambitious, we are at the beginning of our journey.

In addition to our core training and accreditation activities through STAR, we have introduced grant-making and funded programmes of training and education – starting small but strategically to learn, build partnerships and identify our unique value. Our focus will continue to be on leveraging our core competencies, testing approaches, building a track record, identifying strong partners, building relationships, gaining credibility and advocacy & communications in support of our mission and financial sustainability.

Support for Families

We believe that the Montessori approach provides a basis for the future and is one that is easy adopted within the home as well as at nursery or school. Maria Montessori saw the family as being an integral part of a child reaching its full potential.

To support families we

  • Provide free online resources including the Montessori Network
  • Raise awareness of and encourage engagement of families in legislative and policy changes that we believe will have a negative impact on children e.g. the proposed changes on the Early Years Foundation Stage and proposed testing of 4-5 year olds.

We believe we need to address the status of the early years Montessori teacher – both in terms of being able to gain funding for their training and being paid in line with mainstream teachers.

  • We have supported the workforce survey relating to the review of the EYFS commissioned by the Early Years Coalition.
  • We collaborate on and commission wide-ranging research in order to draw focus to the importance of the Montessori workforce and the quality of provision linked to training and qualifications.
  • We are continuing to work with other early years organisations on this work.
  • We provide bursaries for those wishing to upskill or train as Montessori practitioners.

Sustainability

We believe that sustainability education should be a significant element of early childhood education, fostering care and responsibility for each other and our planet.

“The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth.”
